Each year the United States Tennis Association Tennessee honors a young male and female who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship through leadership, civic responsibility, and character while maintaining a competitive spirit. We are so pleased to announce senior Maddox Bandy, GPS varsity tennis player, was awarded the 2017 Junior Sportsmanship Award at the USTA TN Annual Awards Luncheon on Saturday in Nashville.

“Maddox has been a prominent player on the junior circuit in the Southern section, and her high level of play has led GPS to many important singles and doubles wins, including her two TSSAA Individual State Doubles Championships,” said Sue Bartlett, varsity tennis coach. “I am very proud a GPS tennis player was chosen for this honor by the USTA.”

The GPS senior began competing in USTA tournaments at eight years of age and has consistently been ranked in the top 100 in the southern section junior rankings starting with the girls 10s. Maddox has been a member of the GPS varsity team since eighth grade.

She was the TSSAA Individual State Doubles Championship at the Spring Fling in 2015 and 2016 with her doubles partner, Jenna Thorstenson '16. In October 2017, Maddox and her mother, Meg Glass Bandy ‘87, won the Open Division of the USTA’s Mother-Daughter Doubles National Clay Court Championships in Naples, Florida.

GPS was well represented at the annual awards luncheon, as Meg Glass Bandy ‘87, former GPS and current McCallie varsity tennis coach, was named recipient of the USTA TN Tennis Professional of the Year, and Cindy Kemp Battle ’65 and GPS Hall of Fame member, was named to the 2018 Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame.
