Lee University music professor ChoEun Lee, piano, and Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Associate Concertmaster Josh Holritz, violin, will perform a recital on Monday, at 7:30 p.m. in the Squires Recital Hall, in Lee’s Humanities Center.
This faculty recital is the third part in a series on Beethoven’s sonatas. Dr. Lee and Mr. Holritz began the series with two performances last academic year, and this recital will continue the complete cycle with presentations of “Eroica Sonata” and “The Cockcrow Sonata.”
“We look forward to continuing our journey presenting Beethoven’s pioneering works for violin and piano,” said Dr. Lee.
Dr. Lee, an assistant professor of collaborative piano and vocal coaching, has given numerous performances in Korea, the United States, Austria, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand, in major venues including Carnegie Hall, Ozawa Hall (Tanglewood Music Center), and Harris Concert Hall (Aspen Music Festival).
She has worked extensively in recitals and masterclasses with renowned musicians, including Stephanie Blythe, Martin Katz, Anne Sofie von Otter, Christine Schäfer, Dawn Upshaw, and Linda Watson. Dr. Lee was twice invited to Tanglewood Music Festival and been named a recipient of the Grace B. Jackson Prize.
Since 2016, she has been invited as a repetitor to American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz. In 2019, she will premiere co-commissioned vocal chamber music for soprano, saxophone, and piano by Lori Laitman in the National Opera Center in New York City.
Mr. Holritz is a violinist and violist who has performed as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician in Europe, Asia, Africa, and in more than 20 states around the continental U.S. He has been a member of the Glens Falls Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, and served as concertmaster for the Buffalo Community Orchestra (MN). He has performed with the Vienna Radio Orchestra and New World Symphony and currently substitutes with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
He currently maintains a busy performance schedule with Schaafritz, a duo with his wife Kristen Holritz, CSO principal flutist. Additionally, he performs weekly with the CSO String Quintet in an effort to bring classical music to local schools and the greater Chattanooga community. He currently serves as adjunct instructor of violin for UTC and adjunct professor at Covenant College where he teaches violin, viola, and chamber music.
The Monday evening recital is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
