Mitch Rossell, a rising star in country music, will perform and speak at Mel’s Derby Day Sunday, April 29, for the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Foundation.

The event will be held at the Chattanooga Westin. Doors will open at noon for a silent auction. Lunch and the program will begin at 1 p.m.

Review for Mitch Rossell:

Rossell has toured with Garth Brooks as his opening act and wrote Brooks’ latest hit, “Ask Me How I Know.’’ His latest album is “Raised by the Radio.’’ He is a graduate of Silverdale Baptist Academy.

Founded in 2002 by MaryEllen Locher, the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Foundation provides college scholarships to the children of breast cancer patients. Ms. Locher was a well-known WTVC news anchor and health reporter. She started the foundation because she was concerned about the future of her own son. She died in 2005 after her third bout with cancer.

Over the past 15 years, the agency has awarded over 460 scholarships totaling $751,000. A total of 41 college students representing 24 Chattanooga and North Georgia area high schools are current scholarship winners.

Individual tickets are $50 and $30 for children under 10. There is no charge for breast cancer survivors, but survivors must register for the event. Tickets may be secured online by visiting melfoundation.org and clicking on the “Upcoming Events’’ link. There are also a few sponsorship positions available. Corporate or individual sponsorships, individual ticket purchases, and survivor registration can also be completed by e-mailing Cindy Pare, administrator, at cindy@melfoundation.org or by calling the foundation office at 490-4555.

Funds for the foundation are raised through special events, individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and private grants. The foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all contributions are tax-deductible.

In 2014, the organization launched Mel’s Club,’ a breast health awareness and education program for teen girls. Presentations are available for schools, churches, civic organizations and clubs.

For more information about the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Foundation, Mel’s Derby Day, or to schedule a Mel’s Club’ presentation, contact Ms. Pare by e-mail or phone. Visit the website at www.melfoundation.org or find more information on the foundation’s Facebook page.
