An agreement has been reached in the sentencing of James Ray Ward for the murder of a pregnant woman at Villanow, Ga., in August 1989.
Ward was sentenced on Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The victim, Nikia Gilbreath, was five months pregnant at the time of her death.
Ward was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping and feticide in July of 1991.
A Walker County jury recommended a death sentence, which was imposed by Judge Jon Wood.
In 2010, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the convictions but set aside the death penalty.
Afterward, the state announced it would again seek the death penalty.
However, on Monday the state of Georgia and Ward's attorney presented a consent order going forward with a sentence of life without parole to Judge Brian House.
The judge proceeded to sentence Ward to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
