Virginia C. Gwin passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at the age of 96.  

She was born in Knoxville, and had lived in Chattanooga since 1949.  She graduated from Knoxville High School and attended the University of Tennessee. She was a wonderful homemaker.  She loved cooking for her family, was an accomplished seamstress, and enjoyed working in her yard. The last 10 years she lived at Hickory Valley Retirement Center where she participated in the activities and made many friends over the years. She was a loyal member of Brainerd United Methodist Church for 63 years where she was a member of the Wesley Fellowship Class and the Friendship Class.  She was  a Sunday School teacher in the children's department in her younger years and taught her adult Sunday School class in her older years.  She had a deep love for the United Methodist women and served in many capacities, including circle leader and president.  She was a special wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Gwin to whom she was married for 63 years, parents, Alvin L. and Beulah C. Campbell, and her brother, Alvin L. (Bud) Campbell. 

Survivors are her two children, Janet Chandler Nuckolls (Andy) and Dr. John L. Gwin (Brenda); four grandchildren, Dr. Rebecca Chandler (Sebastian), Dr. Matthew Chandler (Lynne), LTJG John L. Gwin III and Mary Chandler Gwin and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, at Brainerd United Methodist Church with the Reverend Laura Trent and Dr. Adam McKee officiating. There will be a private burial following the service. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brainerd United Methodist Church or the Brainerd United Methodist Women. 

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, in the Atrium of Brainerd United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.
