The Chattanooga Housing Authority has been awarded $250,000 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funds are designated for emergency and security improvements.
“One of our primary responsibilities to the individuals and families living in our communities is their safety,” said Elizabeth McCright, CHA executive director. “This grant will help in providing the tools we need to keep our residents safe.”
HUD’s Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program supports public housing authorities as they address safety of public housing residents.
These grants may be used to install, repair or replace capital needs items including security systems/surveillance cameras, fencing, lighting systems, emergency alarm systems, window bars, deadbolt locks and doors.
“These funds will go a long way to help the safety and security of our communities,” said Felix Vess, Chattanooga Housing Police chief.
He noted that the funds will provide digital video recorders and cameras in 11 CHA sites. The communities receiving equipment are: College Hills, Cromwell, Dogwood Manor, East Lake, Emma Wheeler, Fairmont, Gateway Towers, Glenwood, Greenwood Apartments, Mary Walker Towers, and Woodside. Installation will begin early next month taking approximately six months to complete.
“We’re honored that the CHA was one of 22 public housing authorities across the country awarded funds from the $5 million in grants,” said Ms. McCright. “We are grateful for HUD’s continuing support in helping us keep residents safe.”
