Dade County Sheriff's Major Loses Leg While Trying To Stop Fleeing Vehicle; Driver Taken Into Custody

A major in the Dade County Sheriff's Office lost a leg when he was struck by a fleeing vehicle just outside of Trenton on Tuesday afternoon.

Major Tommy Bradford suffered a number of injuries when he was struck by a white pickup truck driven by a female.

Laura Leann Wooten, 35, of Henegar, Ala., was taken into custody.

Fort Payne Police Chief Randy Bynum said, "Around 11: 50 a.m., a resident in Fort Payne reported a suspicious truck in a neighbor’s driveway, The caller reported a woman had gone into a carport at the residence where the caller states the driver picked up an item. The woman left, and the vehicle was later spotted by Fort Payne Officer Ray Morales."

The truck was reported to have been traveling 90 to 95 mph.

Major Bradford was trying to put down traffic spikes on Highway 11 when he was hit.

The chase began in DeKalb County, Ala., Dade County was notified the truck was headed that way around 2:15 p.m.

The woman was a burglary suspect.

The community was having a prayer vigil for Major Bradford, who is the father of six children.
