Lee Men Finish Second In Gulf South Golf Tournament

Lee University placed second in the 54-hole 2024 Gulf South Conference Men’s Golf Championship that was held at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Course. The University of West Florida (869) led from start to finish in claiming the title. The Flames (882) had to battle past the charging Union University team (884) to claim second place in the event. The Argonauts and Flames will move onto regional play in Gainesville, Ga. on May 9-11.

Lee had its best round on Monday (287), slipped to (298) on Tuesday and had a 297 finish. Montevallo and Shorter joined West Florida, the Flames and Union in rounding out the top five in the 10-team field.

Per Ekelund led the Argonauts to the championship and also claimed the medalist honors with an even par 216. Lee senior Oliver Lewis-Perkins had the best round on Wednesday when he fired a 2-under 70. Perkins had back-to-back 74s the first to days and finished fourth in the individual standings with a 218.  His final tally was only two strokes behind the medalist winner Ekelund. A pair of Montevallo golfers finished at 217. Lewis-Perkins also claimed GSC All-Tournament honors.

Trey Melvin slipped to a 75 on Wednesday to go along with his 71-74 (220) and tied for sixth. George Cordall could not get it going in the final round and tallied a 78. He opened the tourney with a 70, came back with a 74 and totaled 222, tied for 10th. Bennett McNabb started with a 72 on Monday, but added rounds of 78, 79 (229). He placed 23rd. Noah Ross only had scores that were posted on Tuesday and Wednesday. His 74 on Wednesday was counted among the team’s final total.
