CHARLESTON, Tenn. -- The Lady Mustangs celebrated seniors Madi Oran and Addison Woodall Tuesday with a solid win over Chattanooga Christian with a 7-2 Senior Night victory over the Lady Chargers.
The Feisty Fillies overcame an early 1-0 deficit scoring all the runs they needed in the bottom of the second inning behind yet another solid effort out of the circle by junior Ryann “Boogs” Presswood.
The swift righty struck out six in a complete game effort giving up five hits and an earned run while walking just one.
“Chattanooga Christian is always a really good team. I thought our girls played really well, played solid defense,” said Walker Valley head coach Lauren Limbug. “It was a total team effort. “Boogs” pitched a really good game.”
The Lady Mustangs (23-5-1) travel to Athens Wednesday for the final District 5-4A matchup in a make-up game with McMinn County.
A win against McMinn County will lock up the No. 1-seed for the upcoming district tournament beginning Friday, hosted by Walker Valley. A loss would mean the Lady Mustangs would be in the No. 2-spot.
CCS (12-15) took a 1-0 lead on a pair of first inning singles before the Lady Mustangs took over in the bottom of the inning.
Alyssa Davenport trotted to first after being hit by a pitch and Woodall reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners later scored thanks to a Presswood double double to center field.
Davenport put her mark on the celebration in a big way in the bottom of the second. Addyson Trew worked CCS pitching for a walk in front of an infield single off the bat of Karly Blackwell. Amy Benson was the beneficiary of the second walk of the inning loading the bases setting the stage for Davenport, who cleared the pads with a grand slam that cleared the center-field fence to make it a 6-1 game.
“We had good at bats. That was a great hit by Allyssa. It really set the tone for the game,” Limburg praised.
The Chargers added a single run in the upper half of the third to cut it to 6-2.
Blackwell opened the bottom of the sixth with a one out double to right and later scored on a bases loaded wild pitch to up the Walker Valley lead to 7-2.
Presswood got a pair of fly balls and a final strikeout to close out the win in the top of the seventh.
“It was overall a great win,” Limburg said afterward. “Our two seniors, we're really proud of them and what they have meant to this program, all they've poured in, the blood, sweat and tears. We just wanted to honor them today. I'm so glad we could get this game in so we could take the time to honor them. We appreciate the impact they have made on Lady Mustangs softball.”
