11th Annual Student SPEAK OUT Conference Is Friday

Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Rick Smith announced that the Hamilton County Board of Education and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) will host the 11th annual Student SPEAK OUT Conference on Friday, at The Chattanoogan from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. The SSAC is an organization comprised of students representing every high school who meet regularly with the Superintendent. The conference is sponsored by the Federal Character Education Partnership Grant.  The entire conference will be student led.

Each high school selected five students to attend the conference.  They will engage in the following focus group discussions led by student members of the SSAC:

  • Has bullying risen to a new low for peer interaction?  What solutions can make a difference?
  • What rights do students have when it comes to religious expression in the schools?
  • How will e-books improve student achievement?
  • How does self-esteem/confidence improve student achievement?
  • What are the pros and cons of internet usage and social networking?
  • Do schools effectively deal with drugs, alcohol and tobacco?
  • How does character development impact decision making in schools today?

Virginia College Hosts Holiday Open House Dec. 6

Virginia College in Chattanooga will host a free Holiday Friends and Family Open House for staff, faculty, students and their families on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to be held at the campus located at 721 Eastgate Loop Road. Lee Student Presents At American Mathematics Society

Lee University student Jonathan Clark presented at the fall Southeastern Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematics Society. Dog Saves Woman From Fire At Highway 58 Area

A homeowner reported that her dog saved her life early Sunday morning. At 12:52 am , the homeowner called 911 reporting a fire at 8411 Providence Road (Highway 58 area). The Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department responded and arrived on the scene reporting a log cabin with flames coming through the roof. Bradley County Police Investigating Shooting

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred in the area of Georgetown Road.  A BCSO officer was waved down at the intersection of 25 th Street and Peerless Road by the driver of a vehicle who told the officer a gunshot victim was inside.
