Commissioner Tim Boyd honored Girls Inc. girls with a special ceremony during a County Commission meeting on Thursday, where they were presented with certificates of recognition. The girls were recognized as shining examples of the power of Girls Inc. programming to prepare girls for a future of success.
Commissioner Boyd praised the girls for their academic achievements and a total of 1,000 hours of community service during their senior year. Each of the girls will be attending the college of their choice in the fall, and four of the girls will be attending school on full-ride scholarships. Alana Moore, a senior at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, is a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship from Girls Inc.’s national scholarship fund. Alana is one of only 30 girls across the country selected for the Lucile Miller Wright scholarship.
Bea Lurie, president and CEO of Girls Inc. of Chattanooga, is grateful for this special honor and for Commissioner Boyd’s generous financial commitment to provide camp scholarships and to purchase Kindles that are helping improving literacy for elementary school participants.
Commissioner Boyd introduced the girls by saying, “Through my involvement with Girls Inc. over the past year, I have become a big supporter of their mission. Starting in kindergarten, Girls Inc. works with local girls and molds them into responsible young adults.”
