Lady Scots Seniors Lead Covenant To 7-0 Win

  • Saturday, October 25, 2014

In the last home game of their careers, seniors Lucy Johnson, Bethany Logan, and transferring junior Rachel Bernard all had memorable games as Covenant rolled past William Peace 7-0 at Scotland yard on Saturday evening.

With the win, their third straight, Covenant improves to 9-8-1 on the year and 7-3 in USA South play.

William Peace falls to 4-13-1 and 2-9 in conference play.

Logan and Bernard had two goals each and even goalkeeper Johnson was allowed to go on the offensive end and scored her first ever collegiate goal on a penalty kick late in the second half.

The Lady Scots struck early and often, building a 3-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of the match. Logan's two goals were sandwiched around one by Ruth Terry. Anna Porch notched assists on both of the goals by Logan. Logan has tallied 24 goals in her career at Covenant.

Jessica Rowe stretched the lead to 4-0 in the first half when she took a pass from Gabby Powell and found the back of the net past William Peace keeper Shannon Maddex in the 38th minute.

In the second half, Bernard's two goals gave the Lady Scots a six-goal advantage and the opportunity for Johnson to move onto the offensive side, where her goal in the 87th minute closed out the scoring and punctuated Covenant's effort.

Along with the recognition for the senior players, longtime assistant coach Gene Ezell was also honored before the match. Ezell has been a part of the women's program since the early 2000s and has decided step down from his position at the end of the year.

Covenant closes out their season with a road test against Piedmont, who sits tied with Maryville at the top of the USA South. The match is Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Demorest, Ga.
