Lady Flames 2nd In BSC Golf Tourney

  • Sunday, October 5, 2014
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - You might say Lee women's golf coach John Maupin has his squad playing in two tournaments this weekend. The Lady Flames are at the Highland Park Golf Course taking part in the annual BSC Southern Shootout, but at the same time they are battling Campbellsville University on the same links for the NCCAA Mid-East Region title.

In the BSC phase of the tourney, Lee trails the University of the Cumberlands by six strokes heading into the final round on Monday.
The Cumberlands posted an 289 and the Lady Flames came in with a 295. In NCCAA play, Lee is 35 strokes ahead of Campbellsville and is assured of a second straight NCCAA Region title when
Monday's play is completed.

"We did some nice things today, but overall I just don't think we were as sharp as we would have liked to be," said Maupin after the first round. "This can be a tricky course in spots, and I think it's important that we commit to better targets tomorrow."

Senior Madison Alexander will be the first to admit that she has not been please with her game in recent months, but she fired an impressive 69 on Sunday and drew praise from coach Maupin. "I am really proud of Madison," said Maupin. "Today was her career-low round and she deserved it. She played smart, solid golf from start to finish. Things have started clicking for her and her talent is really starting to show."

Caroline Moore posted a 73. Bernadette Little followed with a 75 and Cailey Gino came in with a 78 to round out the Lee scores that counted. Sam Burrus tallied an 81.

The tournament leader is Janet Wright of Centenary College, who turned in a 68. Alexander is only one stroke off the pace and the Cumberlands Candice Lindeque is third after her 70.
