UTC Women Win Two Singles, One Doubles In Steve Baras Fall Classic

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team finished the 32nd annual UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic by winning three draws today.  The Mocs won two singles titles and a doubles crown at the Champions Club.

Senior Kaylene Chadwell and junior Kelsey Coots were co-champions of the Choo Choo draw.  They both advanced to the finals with wins yesterday. Junior Alison Storie came out on top in the Tennessee River Draw with a three-set win today.  She held off Jacksonville State’s Genevie Ulanday (7-5, 5-7, 6-3). 

Coots and fellow junior Kayla Jones teamed up to take the top doubles flight.

 They beat UT Martin’s Naito and Tari 8-2 in the finals of the Blue Doubles Draw. 

Jones finished second in the Blue Singles Draw, featuring the top players in the tournament.  She lost in the finals to Eastern Kentucky’s Amandine Faouzi in a three-set battle (6-1, 0-6, 7-5). 

Freshman Samantha Caswell placed third in the Gold Draw.  She won her third place match today over Western Carolina’s Shannon Bettiol (7-5, 6-1).  She has a win and a third place showing in two tournaments in her young career. 

Senior Claire Mulydai also had a third place finish today.  She defeated Lipscomb’s Jenny Borck (6-2, 6-2) in the Lookout Mountain Draw. Senior Jovana Pecovski capped off a strong weekend as part of a split doubles team.  She partnered with Samford’s Savannah Wood to win three doubles matches in the White Draw round-robin.

The  Mocs men’s tennis team also completed action at the 32nd annual UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic.  Junior Nick Wingord dropped a tough three-setter in the finals of Flight 1 while junior Gino Delavalle won the Flight 3 back draw. 

Wingord, a transfer from Abilene Christian University, had a strong showing in his first home action.  He battled Jacksonville State’s Pedro Wagner before falling (7-5, 5-7, 6-3). 

Wingord also teamed with junior Luke Saunders in the Flight 2 doubles finals.  They lost to a split squad of Belmont’s Hans Nardelli and Eastern Kentucky’s Daridge Saidi in a tiebreaker 8-7 (5). 

Delavalle scored a nice win in the consolation finals of Flight 3.  He posted a (6-2, 7-5) win over Caio Niel.  Freshmen Mason Grear and Michael Birnbaum got their second win of the tournament with an 8-2 victory over Tennessee Tech’s Alvaro Cintas and Yusuke Yodono in the Flight 4 doubles round-robin. 

The Mocs next fall competition is the ITA/Ohio Valley Regional in Nashville.  Action takes place on Oct. 16-19.  Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for a preview.
