The Chattanooga Civitan Club raised $9,175 for local children's charities during their annual fruitcake auction on Friday afternoon.
As a part of a tradition that started all the way back in 1954, Claxton fruitcakes were auctioned off to members and guests. The idea for the event started developing in 1952 after a suggestion from a visiting member from Florida.
Claxton fruitcakes from the Claxton Fruitcake Factory in Claxton, Ga. were decided upon, and the rest is history.
Another major part of the tradition is the attendance of Miss Tennessee, who has been a part of the auction since 1968.
On Friday, all of the highest fruitcake bidders had their pictures taken with this year's Miss Tennessee, Hayley Lewis.
At one point, three fruitcakes even received $500 bids.
Some of the charities served by the Civitan Club include Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Chambliss Children's Center, and Orange Grove Center.
