Hamilton County was under a tornado watch beginning Monday afternoon, then it switched to a warning shortly after 9 p.m.
Many took shelter as the city experienced heavy lightning and thunderstorms until after 10 p.m.
There were reports of damage at Daisy-Dallas Road, Hixson Pike and the Lakesite area.
There were reports of power lines down on Hale Road in the Middle Valley area, and trees reported down in the Soddy Daisy area. There were no reports of weather-related injuries.
In the Middle Valley area, the following damages were reported:
Wires down at N. Prairie at Hensley.
Wires and trees down at the 8100 block of Hale Road at Central Drive.
Tree down at the 200 block of Hale Road at Central Drive.
Tree down at the 1700 block of Hidden Harbor Road.
Wires down at Daisy Dallas and Dallas Lake Road.
Power outages were centered in the Hixson-Northgate and Soddy Daisy areas.
Then at 10:18 p.m., radar indicated a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing half-dollar-size hail and destructive winds in excess of 70 mph. These storms were located along a line extending from six miles south of Dayton to near South Cleveland and moving northeast at 45 mph.
There was another scare on Tuesday morning when Hamilton, Bradley and Meigs counties went on a tornado watch that extended until 7 a.m.
Due to the possibility of severe weather, Hamilton County Schools will be on a two-hour delay on Tuesday. School Aged Child Care will be closed in the morning.
There was a tornado warning issued at 9:23 p.m. for Dade County, Ga. The storm was said to be proceeding at 35 mph southwest of Trenton.
The bulk of the initial storm appeared to be just west of Chattanooga in the vicinity of Winchester and Tullahoma, Tn. There was a confirmed sighting of a tornado at Huntland, Tn., in Franklin County.
The possible severe weather earlier caused the county schools to cancel some activities.
School officials said, "Due to a chance of severe weather in our area late this afternoon and tonight, we are cancelling all after school activities. School Aged Child Care will close at the regular time this evening. As a precautionary measure, T-Cap testing slated to begin on Tuesday will be delayed until Wednesday. The regular testing schedule will begin on Wednesday.
"If school is delayed or cancelled for tomorrow we will inform you this evening or in the morning."
Bradley County School officials said, "Due to potential severe weather, all Bradley County Schools’ after-school activities are cancelled for Monday evening, April 28, 2014, including Bradley/Polk Adult Education."
Hamilton County Emergency Services will activate the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 5 p.m. "anticipating the severe weather coming in this evening."
Officials said, "Residents are encouraged to stay close to their local media outlets and take necessary precautions if the anticipated weather conditions materialize."
