Monument At North Ocoee And Eighth Streets Restored

  • Friday, June 27, 2014
Baston Monuments Inc., of Elberton, Ga., reassembled the monument at North Ocoee and Eighth streets Thursday. The monument was toppled several weeks ago when it was struck during a traffic accident.

Michael Baston and Michael Smith first maneuvered a 2,900-pound section of the base during the restoration. The obelisk, weighing about 3,200 pounds, was lifted onto the pedestal.

Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland announced that a rededication will take place July 2, on the monument’s 125th anniversary, at 11 a.m. at the History Branch Library, at 833 N.

Ocoee St. Local historian Debbie Moore will share the history and recount the story of the three men killed in a train accident in Virginia.
