Barbourville, KY – The Dalton State volleyball team had a “failure to communicate” Tuesday night and left Union College with its first loss of the young season, 0-3.
“We played terrible,” said Roadrunners coach Bruna Langner. “Hopefully, this will be a learning process for our girls. We didn’t serve well, we didn’t communicate, and yet we were in the first two games.”
Dalton State started strong in the first two sets. In game one, the Roadrunners led 4-1. The Lady Bulldogs came back and took their first lead at 9-10. They then outscored their guests by eight to take the set, 25-16.
Dalton jumped out to a 3-1 second set lead, but were tied at five and again at six. The Roadrunners would never again reach a tie in the match. Union had a 24-16 lead. Dalton scored four straight points before the hosts finally earned the set at 25-20.
Like other Union College wins this season, the final set was all Bulldogs. They never trailed on their way to the 25-11 victory.
On the night, Union College had 40 kills to Dalton State’s 18, 34 assists to the Roadrunners' 18, and 41 digs to 25.
Savannah Nelson scored six points (4 kills), Kianna Delaney scored 5.5 points (3 kills), Alyne Bianchi had five points (4 kills) and Anna Metzler five points (3 kills). Michala Askew had 11 assists.
Union’s Paige Moore scored 11 points on 11 kills.
Dalton State will host Southern Wesleyan (SC) on Coach “O” Court at Bandy Gym Friday at 7 p.m.
