Soddy Daisy Commissioners Say State Needs To Fix Dangerous Intersection

  • Thursday, September 18, 2014

Soddy Daisy Commissioners said Thursday night that the state needs to improve a dangerous intersection where there have been at least four fatalities.

Commissioners cited a recent death where Dayton Pike connects with Highway 27.

Commissioner Gene Shipley said he and his wife were almost hit while pulling out from Dayton Pike recently. He said an acceleration lane is needed.

City Manager Janice Cagle said the deaths have involved people trying to cross the busy highway.

Vice Mayor Patti Skates said she saw a state trooper pull out after a speeding car and almost get hit by a speeding car going in the same direction.

City Manager Cagle said the city may add some caution lights. She said new rumble strips are needed.

Commissioners mentioned another section of Highway 27 where vehicles have been hydroplaning in a section that has been puddling. City Manager Cagle said that area formerly had a berm that diverted the water, but it got paved over.

Commissioner Shipley bemoaned the fact that only 370 people have signed up for a storm warning system.

City Manager Cagle said those without computers can get on the system. She said sign-up forms will be available at the upcoming Pumpkin Fest.

She said the city was unsuccessful in getting a CDBG grant for Fire Hall #3. She said it was the city's first try and it will work on improving its application.

Mayor Rick Nunley said papers have been signed for the city's $3 million purchase of a scenic tract at Big Soddy Creek Gulf.

"It's our now," he said.

The commission had no new business and no old business so it was a 21-minute session.

New County Commissioner Randy Fairbanks was at the meeting with his wife, Marti, and he told citizens he has a published number and is consistently available.
