From classical to blues to choral and everywhere in between, Dalton State College’s Concerts on Campus series will offer a variety of musical styles this fall.
The series, which began in early September, continues with Christina Howell, award-winning operatic soprano, in a concert on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall at the College. All concerts are free and open to the public and are sponsored by the Dalton State School of Liberal Arts.
Ms. Howell, voice professor at Clayton State University, has built a recital around a newly composed set of cowboy songs by Cherise Leiter, one of the finalists for a recent National Association of Teachers of Singing Art Song Composition Competition, according to Dr. Ellie Jenkins, assistant professor of Music at Dalton State.
The concert will also include the set “Songs from Letters” by Libby Larsen about the Wild West icon Calamity Jane, as well as some Spanish language songs from South American composers which continue the theme of wide open spaces so inspiring to the cowboy poets.
Contemporary blues artist and Georgia native E.G. Kight returns to the Dalton State campus on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m., bringing her uniquely soulful voice that won her the nickname “Georgia Songbird.” The concert will be in the Goodroe Auditorium, also.
"Her musical style transcends musical boundaries and has been called ‘country-flavored southern-fried blues,’ blending Americana, southern rock, blues, pop, jazz, gospel and funk,” Dr. Jenkins said.
The Dalton-Whitfield Community Band will present its annual fall concert on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Northwest Whitfield High School, performing challenging and beautiful works for concert band, Dr. Jenkins said.
Included in the program will be “Irish Tune from County Derry,” marches by John Philip Sousa, and an arrangement of “Precious Lord” by renowned band composer Robert W. Smith. In addition, Dr. Jenkins will be featured as a soloist in “Stormy Seas” for horn soloist and concert band.
Continuing the Concerts on Campus Series will be the Campus Community Concert, set for Monday, Nov. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium. This is an annual concert featuring Dalton State students, faculty, and staff.
“In the past, these concerts have included everything from classical trombone to gospel to hard rock,” said Dr. Jenkins. “You never know what you’re going to hear at a Campus Community Concert.”
Dalton State will welcome back Chorus Peregrinus on Monday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. to kick off the holiday season while simultaneously closing out the semester in Goodroe Auditorium.
The chorus is comprised of singers from in and around Dalton, and regularly performs concerts in many churches and other venues in the area. They will bring their annual “Lessons and Carols” program of sacred vocal music to the audience.
