Niche.com provides insight to parents, students and professionals that are looking to change districts, schools or move to a new city. Carnegie Mellon University students founded the site in 2002, formerly CollegeProwler.com. Now, Niche.com provides content and rankings to millions each year.

Unlike other rating sites, Niche.com takes into consideration opinions of parents and students who are a part of the district or school. They give their input by taking surveys and writing reviews on various aspects of school districts and individual schools. Hard data, such as graduation rates, student outcomes, literacy and demographics, are also compiled as part of the equation. All of the data are weighted and calculated by Niche.com resulting in a grade used to determine the rankings.
