UTC Jazz Band Has Concert Nov. 20

  • Wednesday, October 28, 2015

The UTC Jazz Band will host a concert entitled "Standards and Swing" on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m.in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall on the UTC campus.  Admission is free.

Review for the program:

Music will include two well-known charts written by Neal Hefti for the Count Basie Orchestra in the 1950s.  Mr. Hefti went on to write the music for the Batman TV series, and the Odd Couple film and TV series.  We are also featuring two charts by Benny Carter, a very highly respected yet perhaps less known composer from the 1930s and 40s.  His music was played by Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey.  Mr. Carter's own band included Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson, and Max Roach.

The performance will also feature our two vocalists, Kayla Petrille and Alea Tveit.

The program includes the following:
Symphony in Riffs by Benny Carter
Lil' Darlin' by Neal Hefti
Cute by Neal Hefti
When Sunny Gets Blue by Marvin Fisher and Jack Segal
Straighten Up and Fly Right by Nat King Cole and Irving Mills
Wiggle Walk by Benny Carter
Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me by Duke Ellington and Bob Russell
No Moon at All by Redd Evans and Dave Mann
On Green Dolphin Street by Bronislau Kaper
Groove Merchant by Jerome Richardson
