For the second time in a week, the Georgia Northwestern Bobcats put up 60 points in the second half of a basketball game.
And for the second time in a week, they need every one of those points to pull out a victory.
After scoring 60 in the second half of a 98-87 home win over the LaGrange College JV team last Monday, the Bobcats improved to 4-2 on the season in Powell, Tenn. on Saturday after outscoring The Crown College, 97-88.
The opening half saw several lead changes before a late run gave the Bobcats a 37-33 advantage at intermission, marking their biggest lead of the half.
Georgia Northwestern's press forced some turnovers by Crown in the later stages of the second half as the Bobcats built an 83-73 lead with 3:30 to play.
But two big 3-pointers by the home team and two missed lay-ups by the visitors would tighten up the score as Crown cut Georgia Northwestern's lead to just two points with 51 seconds left to play.
Darrius Fugh came up big for the Bobcats with a steal before connecting on a pair of free throws, but Crown would get a bucket to slice the lead back down to two. Georgia Northwestern would miss on its next field goal attempt, but Christopher Ellis had a huge offensive rebound and put-back to push the lead to four once more.
Crown cut the lead back to two for a third time, 90-88, with 19.5 seconds to go, but Tyler Shropshire would hit two foul shots for the Bobcats and he would come up with a key steal before going back to the line after Crown was forced to foul.
Shropshire would hit those two free throws and the Bobcats would tack on three more points in the waning seconds to pull out the road win.
Free throw shooting turned out to be one of the big stories of the game as the Bobcats went 23-of-27 on the afternoon. Fugh had the hot hand as he went 10-of-10 at the charity stripe and finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Ellis had a monster game with 24 points and 16 rebounds, while Shropshire went for 15 points to go with three assists and two steals. Daniel Parrish contributed nine points to aid the cause.
Luke Dalton and Chad Manious had 25 points each for Crown.
Georgia Northwestern will host a doubleheader at the Rossville Athletic Center on Monday against the Bryan College junior varsity squads. The Lady Bobcats tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow.
