  • Sunday, February 15, 2015

Friends of the Chattanooga Public Library is providing a new project for the Chattanooga Public Library Teen/Tween programs at all of its branches and two elementary schools who expressed interest in participating in this special project. Early Peoples Cultural Revelation with Masks project is serving 300 children who have researched various early peoples around the world, Native Americans, and various African peoples. The children will paint cultural masks with local artist, Larry Bullington of The Masters Studio.

This project has been made possible with a grant received from the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga.

Fifth grade students at McConnell Elementary painted cultural masks representing the following cultures they researched: Eskimo, Ancient Chinese, Ancient Japanese, Babylonians, Ancient Egyptians, Australian Aboriginals, Ancient India, ancient Nepal, Cherokee, Iroquois, Vikings, Ancient Greeks, and Ancient Romans.  Completed masks are displayed at the school for other students, parents, and community members to view.

Teen/tweens at Northgate Library branch worked with local artist, Larry Bullington to paint various Native American masks. On March 31 and April 1 the Teen/tweens at the Downtown, Eastgate, and South Chattanooga branches will paint Native American masks with artist Larry Bullington.

Third grade students at Orchard Knob Elementary worked with local artist, Larry Bullington on Feb. 5 and 12, painting African Masks. These masks will be showcased at the school on Feb. 24, during a parent night African American History program.
