19th Annual Piano Arts Competition Held At UTC

Fifteen students competed at the 19th annual Piano Arts Competition at the The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Roland Hayes Concert Hall. Each year this competition provides an opportunity for talented young pianists to showcase their abilities. Participating students perform a minimum of two works in contrasting styles, and this competition is open to the public in festival format.

First prize winners in each category are invited back to UTC for a Winners Recital and Joshua Stanczak and Margaret Lim will be featured on Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. in the UTC Cadek Recital Hall, 725 Oak Street, Chattanooga. The performance will be open to the public. Admission and parking are both free.

The winners this year hail from Chattanooga, Hixson, Murfreesboro, Nashville, and Soddy Daisy, and Ringgold.

The winners in the High School Category were:

First prize: Margaret Lim from Ringgold, student of Ann Pope.

Second prize: Emily Henderson from Hixson, student of Sigrid Luther

Third prize: Josiah Hinchman from Chattanooga, student of Tammy Benson

Honorable Mention:

Chad Alexander Miller from Soddy Daisy, student of Margy Barber

Angela Onan from Nashville, student of Mark Johnson

Grace Stipelcovich from Chattanooga, student of Tammy Benson

The winners in the Middle School Category were:

First Prize: Joshua Stanczak from Murfreesboro, student of Alice Jackson

Second Prize: Ethan Farnam from Chattanooga, student of David Walters

The judges of the competition were Irina Polyakova, UTC alumna, and Dr. Chih-Long Hu. Dr. Sin-Hsing Tsai, UTC Keyboard Area Coordinator, served as non-voting chair.  Margaret, Chad, and Grace have all been winners in previous years.
