Pooler, Ga. – The Southern States Athletic Conference Champions Dalton State women’s golf team shot a 21-over par 309 on Monday to sit in a tie for seventh place during the NAIA National Championship on Monday at Savannah Quarters Country Club.
With lightning in the area, the first round of play was suspended with a number of afternoon pairings left on the course. The Roadrunners had teed off in the morning and had completed their day at the time of the interruption.
The first round will resume Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. Second round pairings will remain unchanged.
Caroline Griffin, SSAC Freshman of the Year and the individual medalist in the SSAC Championship, fired a 1-over par 73.
Julia McQuilken, the conference Co-Newcomer of the Year, carded a 2-over par 74.
Rachel Rebne was 6-over par 78. Co-Newcomer of the year Erika Wardzinski shot an 84. Taylor Marie Griner finished the day with an 87.
“I’m really proud of the way we played today (Tuesday),” said Dalton Coach Jim McGrew. “We wanted to get off to a good start and we were able to do so. We could have made it a special day with a better finish. There is still plenty of golf left and we are in a good position.”
Our SSAC individual golfers remain in contention. Sarah Gilliard of Coastal Georgia finished Tuesday with a 5-over par 77 and Mobile’s Heather Nail earned a 3-over 75.
Through 12, Heather Shake of Victoria – Houston completed 12 holes Tuesday at -1.
Bellevue University leads the team board with an 18-hole 300. British Columbia is one stroke back at 301. William Woods shot a team 305. Oklahoma City is fourth at 307. SCAD-Savannah and Northwood U (Fla.) are tied for fifth.
The five Roadrunner golfers will tee off from 1:50-2:30 ET on Wednesday.
