Public works runs deep in the Hasty family.

That’s why it was appropriate that Trey Hasty, a 2015 graduate  of Northwest Whitfield High School, received a $1,000 scholarship through the Georgia Chapter American Public Works Association Scholarship Program.

To qualify for one of the 11 scholarships presented annually, a student must be a child of a public works employee or be a current public works employee with plans to pursue a degree in a public works discipline.

Mr.
Hasty has the unique qualification of having both parents who are employed by Whitfield County Public Works.  His mother, Barbara, is an administrative professional, and his father, Rick, works in the Parks Division.

Mr. Hasty plans to attend Dalton State College this fall to major in Pre-Engineering, and his goal is to use the foundation established there to transfer to Georgia Tech and complete his degree in Civil Engineering.

“Trey is a tremendously mature young adult, and that became very apparent during my scholarship phone interview with him,” said Andrew Parker, District 7 director, Georgia Chapter Executive Committee, American Public Works Association.

“It’s very unique to find a high school graduate, like Trey, who has such a focused plan for his future education and career.  Trey acknowledged to me that his love for public works became apparent as a child through the impressions left on him by his mother and father who have made countless contributions to the public works profession,” said Mr. Parker, assistant public works director for the City of Dalton.

“He knew very clearly at an early age that he wanted to pursue a career that would have a positive impact on the community, and that’s what helped lead him toward his career path in public works.  Trey informed me that he looks forward to being a part of projects that improve the public infrastructure like roads and bridges to help benefit the traveling public.”

During a District 7 meeting held June 17 at the Dalton Convention Center, Mr. Parker announced that Mr. Hasty had won the scholarship.

“I look forward to witnessing all of the contributions Trey is able to make to the public works profession,”Mr.  Parker said, “and for the betterment of our community through the education he obtains through higher education.”
