Circuit Court Clerk's Office Hit With New Scam

  • Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Circuit Court Clerk Larry Henry said his office has been hit by another scam.

He said a number of county residents are getting calls saying it is from a collection agency and they owe money through his General Sesssions Court civil division.

Circuit Court Clerk Henry said, "These people are saying that if you do not pay up, you will be prosecuted and the sheriff will come after them. They are asking that the money be sent to them.

"The caller is also trying to get personal information, such as credit card and Social Security numbers."

He said the people who are called are given bogus warrant numbers.

Circuit Court Clerk Henry said, "That is not the way we operate. Our office will never call saying that you owe money."

In the case of money owed the court, he said letters are sent out that give the amount owed and the case number. He said the letters are signed by him.

Nancy Masterson, who heads that division, said one person who got the threatening call gave her the long distance number that it came from.

She said she dialed the number and "I could hear other operators talking in the background. The person who answered spoke briefly, then hung up."
