2 Angels Mushroom Farm Receives 2015 Best Of Harrison Award

  • Wednesday, July 29, 2015

The 2 Angels Mushroom Farm has been selected for the 2015 Best of Harrison Award in the Farms category by the Harrison Award Program.  The 2 Angels Mushroom Farm is a small family farm located hear Harrison Bay that grows over 14 different varieties of both gourmet and medicinal mushrooms.

The farm is owned by Angel Miller. She and her husband, Michael, are avid hikers and outdoorsmen who have always enjoyed foraging for wild mushrooms while in the woods. That hobby developed into a business, when they founded the farm in 2013.

“Growing healthy delicious mushrooms to feed our community is a great honor for us," said Mrs. Miller.  "Mushrooms have become our passion, and working the farm brings us a lot of joy."

The various mushrooms produced on the farm are all grown naturally without the aid of chemicals or pesticides. “We would never sell anything to our neighbors that we wouldn’t eat ourselves,” Mrs. Miller adds. The farm is not open to the public, but they are a regular vendor at the Ooltewah Farmers Market at Ooltewah Nursery every Thursday all year round, and are often at the Lookout Farmers Market.

In addition, the farm often supplies mushrooms to the Bald Headed Bistro in Cleveland. Executive Chef, Eric Fulkerson, offers an ever-changing menu of local foods. “We get excited to see the creative dishes he invents with our mushrooms.”

Unlike traditional farms, 2 Angels Mushroom Farm, grows all year round. They grow seasonally, which means that mushrooms produced in the summer are different than those produced in the winter, spring or fall. The summer mushrooms offered at the farmers markets now will usually be hot weather and tropical mushrooms, such as the popular Pink Flamingo mushroom.  Mrs. Miller says, “These pink mushrooms are native to Indonesia, and have a ham-like flavor, which makes them especially popular with our vegetarian customers. Mushrooms in general are very high in protein, B-vitamins, iron, copper, potassium, and zinc. They are also the best source of vitamin-D you can find in the produce department.  Also, we harvest wild mushrooms that can’t be farmed. Right now we are picking wild Golden Chanterelles. They have an apricot/almond-like flavor that we adore.”

Beyond fresh mushrooms, the farm also serves the community through various educational opportunities. Throughout the year they offer various classes, workshops, and lectures on a wide variety of mushroom topics such as “Introduction To Wild Mushroom Hunting,” “Build A Shiitake Log Workshop,” and “Adding Mushrooms To Your Garden.”  In fact, Mrs. Miller has become a popular guest speaker. This year she has presented to the Sierra Club, the Chattanooga Newcomers Luncheon and the Master Your Garden Expo.
