Longtime Minister Of Music At Soddy Church Of God

Roy L. Newman, 83, lifelong resident of Soddy Daisy, died on Wednesday, July 29, 2015.

He was the minister of music at Soddy Church of God for 40 years. Roy was a graduate of Lee University where he sang in several quartets. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was with Meals on Wheels for 13 years. Roy was an insurance broker for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Claude and Hazel Newman and sisters, Mary Jo Ellis and Debbie Ford. 

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jean Newman; daughter, Renee’ Newman Darden and husband, Michael; grandchildren, Michael, Benjamin and Timothy; sister, Betty Bandy and husband, Rev. James; sister-in-law, Gail Ketron and husband, Charles; aunt, Edith Mulkey and several nieces and nephews. 

Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Soddy Church of God with Dr. Edward Williams, Reverend James Bandy, Reverend Arville Hurst and Reverend Clayton Privett officiating. Burial will follow at Presbyterian Cemetery with nephews serving as pallbearers. Mr. Newman will lie in state for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Visitation is on Friday, July 31, from 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, R.L. would have wanted a donation made to the New Directions Autism Program that has supported his grandchildren. Contributions can be made to New Direction Autism Program, 4545 Suwanee Dam Road, Suwanee, Ga. 30024.
