Bus Driver Norma Sanders on Thursday became CARTA’s first black female to be inducted into the Million Mile Club.

The club honors individuals who have driven one million miles without having any chargeable accidents.

Ms. Sanders, who has been with CARTA for 31 years, also became the first black female to make number one on the Driver Seniority List.

CARTA board members dedicated the majority of their meeting to celebrate Ms. Sanders’ achievements. Executive Director Lisa Maragnano presented a gold coat to the newest Million Mile member. A large white and yellow cake was provided for everyone who came out in support.

The audience clapped and cheered when she received her gold coat.

Three of the existing seven Million Mile Club members stood up with Ms. Sanders as she was inducted. According to Ms. Maragnano, there are 293 years of safe driving between the eight CARTA drivers. Altogether the group has driven over eight million miles.

Ms. Maragnano said she was “very excited, honored, proud, and pleased” to present Ms. Sanders with her coat.

“I thank the good Lord for this day because he’s worthy to be praised,” Ms. Sanders said.

She thanked each of her family members and friends by name for coming to her celebration.

Bus drivers carry the responsibility to courteously and safely transport customers in rain, snow, or shine. “I never understood how these guys and now this lady can drive one million miles without any chargeable accidents,” Chairman Steve Jett said.

He acknowledged how proud he was to award the gold coat to Ms. Sanders, and that today marked “a tremendous accomplishment” for CARTA.

Once the meeting adjourned and it came time for cake, many rushed to congratulate Ms. Sanders who wore a happy smile and her bright new coat.

When asked what she thought about her big achievements, she humbly gave credit to God then said, “I’m just happy that this day came.”
