Scots Win 1-0 In Overtime

  • Tuesday, October 18, 2016
The Covenant men's soccer team broke through on the road for a victory for the first time this season in dramatic fashion. Carl Simakoff scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute to give the Scots a 1-0 overtime victory at Piedmont in USA South action on Tuesday night.

Covenant (5-9-2, 5-5 USA South) picks up its first road win despite close calls in two of the last three road matches at Sewanee and Birmingham Southern earlier this year. The match was the final USA South regular season contest for the Scots and clinches a spot in the conference tournament.

After two scoreless halves, Covenant came through in the 93rd minute.
Simakoff headed in a ball from John O'Carroll into the back of the net and past Piedmont keeper Mitch Barry for the game-winner.

The goal was Simakoff's team-leading eighth of the year and his second game-winner. O'Carroll's assist was his second of the year.

Piedmont (8-6-1, 4-4 USA South) outshot Covenant 12-5, but the Scots held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Josh Brower took three of Covenant's five attempts. Piedmont's Chase Kane had a header towards the net in the 76th minute, but Covenant keeper Jonathan Crossman made the save to preserve the scoreless tie at the moment.

Crossman made three saves, with two of those coming in the second half. Barry also made three saves on the night for Piedmont.

Covenant will conclude the regular season on Saturday at home against regionally-ranked Emory. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
