Corker, Alexander, Perdue Praise Extension Of Iran Sanctions Act

  • Thursday, December 1, 2016

Senator Bob Corker on Thursday praised renewal of the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), which ensures President-elect Donald J. Trump has the ability to reimpose the sanctions the Obama administration lifted to implement the Iran nuclear deal. The Senate extended ISA, which otherwise would expire at year’s end, by a vote of 99 to 0.

Senator Corker said, “Extending the Iran Sanctions Act gives us the ability to reimpose the sanctions the Obama administration lifted to implement the Iran nuclear deal and ensures President-elect Trump and his administration have the tools necessary to push back against the regime’s hostile actions,” said Corker. “I am pleased by the overwhelming support this bill received in both the House and Senate and look forward to continuing our work to hold Tehran accountable.”

Senator Lamar Alexander said, “Iran remains a threat to our national security, to Middle East stability, and to Israel, one of our strongest allies, which is why I voted to preserve these important sanctions.”

Georgia Senator David Perdue said, “President Obama never should have waived key sanctions on Iran. Before the ink was dry on his dangerous nuclear deal, the rogue nation test-fired ballistic missiles and accumulated excess heavy water, which could be used for making plutonium bombs. Since then, Iran has continued to threaten our strategic allies in the Middle East and weaponized terrorist groups across the volatile region. Today, we took action to reauthorize key sanctions, giving President-elect Trump a full menu of options to implement against Iran for any future transgressions. I look forward to working with President-elect Trump to hold Iran accountable for its ballistic missile development, support for terrorism, and other illicit activity.”

Senator Perdue has introduced several pieces of legislation to hold Iran accountable, including a bill to prohibit cash payments to state sponsors of terror, and another to improve oversight of the implementation of President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the legislation on Nov. 15, by a vote of 419 to 1.
