Friday was a special day for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team.
The Mocs shared the pitch at Scrappy Moore Field with members of the TOPSoccer program for a skills clinic. TOPSoccer is an official US Youth Soccer program enriching the lives of young athletes with disabilities through the game of soccer. It is aimed at youth, ages 5-18 years, with a physical and/or cognitive disability.
"As a program we are always looking for ways to get involved in the Chattanooga community," Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said.
"TOPSoccer reached out to us and we were more than happy to get involved with their group.
"It was an amazing thing to see these kids open up to our girls through the game of soccer. The joy in the kids' faces just playing the game with our players was an unbelievable thing to see. Any time we can bring happiness through our sport, it is a phenomenal thing."
The entire spring roster of Chattanooga players took part in the clinic and got as much out of the experience as the TOPSoccer athletes.
"I would say working with the kids last week at Scrappy will be one of the best memories I have from spring season with the team," Chattanooga captain Peyton McCollum said. "I could tell everyone really enjoyed it. Nothing beats sharing a smile and making those kids laugh!
"This kind of team activity is so rewarding. I look forward to doing again."
