Flames Rained Out; Advance To GSC Tournament

  • Saturday, April 30, 2016
Heavy rains and a thunderstorm moved across Olympic Field just minutes before the first pitch was scheduled to be thrown in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday between the Lee baseball Flames and the University of West Florida.

With the rain pouring down and extreme heavy lightning in the area, the doubleheader was cancelled and GSC rules say a series cannot be carried over an extra day...

The good news is the Flames have qualified for the GSC tournament which gets underway on Saturday, May 7 at 4 p.m.
and will run through May 10. Lee (18-11 GSC, 30-16 overall) is seeded sixth and will face host and top-seeded West Florida on Saturday at 12 noon (EDT). It is a double-elimination event and the final pairings will be released by the GSC office after all games are completed this weekend.

"I am really proud of these guys in qualifying for our first GSC tournament," praised coach Mark Brew. "To go 17-4 in our last 21 GSC games says a lot about this team and commitment to finding a way to get into the tournament. This conference is so grueling week in and week out and we have found a way to overcome a lot of things this season.

"It's a great opportunity for growth for our program as we compete in Pensacola next week.  Playing West Florida at home will be a tough task, but this team has the ability to make a run and we are excited to compete in that environment."
