Navy League and Naval Sea Cadets from eight different states came to Signal Mountain in order to participate in the Mountain Rope Rescue – Operational Level training conducted by Pat Wagner and her staff of instructors.
At the beginning of the week long training the cadets were taught the various knots and equipment used in rescue operations. For the next five days, they were constantly challenged both physically and mentally as they were taught the techniques in the classroom, and then were tasked with demonstrating them both on the training wall and in wilderness settings.
The wilderness scenarios were conducted first near Rainbow Falls, and then culminated with several different techniques hanging over Edwards Point.
Mrs. Wagner, owner of Mountain Rope Safety Course (and its lead instructor), said she was excited to conduct the training with the cadets and was impressed with them, in spite of their age. Comments were made by all the instructors not only on their work ethic and positive attitudes, but also about their politeness and eagerness to challenge themselves with these new skills. Mrs. Wagner said, “From the largest to the smallest, the Sea Cadets exemplified integrity and teamwork throughout the week. All of the instructors want you to know we really enjoyed working with you!”
The class consisted of 22 cadets, both male and female, ranging in age from 12 to 17. In addition to local cadets from the Signal Mountain and Chattanooga divisions, cadets traveled from Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
