Dalton State Tied For 7th In NAIA Golf Tournament

Silva, Il. Dalton State is tied for seventh place after the first round of the 65th annual National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Men’s Golf Championship tournament on the first hole at the 7,066 yards, par-71 TPC at Deere Run.

The Roadrunners shot a 15 over par 299 on Tuesday. Chase Jones led DS with a two-under, 69. Austin Hughes shot a 75, Levi Nix tallied a 77, Sean Elliott completed the first round at 78, and Dalton Johnson shot a 79.

“The guys did a good job today,” said DS Coach Ben Rickett. “We have the first round of the championship under our belt. We let a few shots get away from us later in the round, but it was still a good round.”

Jones is currently tied for individual medalist with Matt Wells and Alasdair McDougall of William Woods and Callum McGuigan of the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).

Dalton State is in a three-way tie with British Columbia and Victoria (BC).

Number one ranked William Woods (Mo.) finished the Tuesday morning round with an even par 284. Oklahoma City is eight strokes behind in second with a 292. Wayland Baptist (294) is in third with the University of the Cumberlands one stroke behind.

Johnson & Wales (Fl.) and Texas Wesleyan are tied for fifth with a 298 each. There is a tie for 10th at 301 between South Carolina Beaufort, Oregon Tech, and Oklahoma Wesleyan

Two-time defending national champions Coastal Georgia is currently 21st with a 311.

Dalton State is scheduled to tee off Wednesday at noon with William Woods and Keiser. “The weather could come into play,” said Rickett. “We will just have to wait and see.”
