Eastern National Hosts Book Signing Event With Author David Powell

  • Friday, September 9, 2016

Eastern National, in partnership with Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park, invites the public to join Author David A. Powell at the Eastern National Bookstore to sign his final title to the Chickamauga Campaign trilogy, Chickamauga Campaign--Barren Victory  from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17.

This book examines the immediate aftermath of this great battle with unprecedented clarity and detail.

The narrative opens at dawn on Monday September 21, 1863 with Union Commander William S. Rosecrans in Chattanooga and most of the rest of his Federal army in Rossville, GA.  Confederate General Braxton Bragg, has won the single victory of his career, but has yet to fully grasp that fact or the fruits of his success.  Unfortunately for the south, three grueling days of combat has broken down the Army of Tennessee and made a vigorous pursuit nearly impossible.  In addition to carefully examining the decisions made by each army commander and their consequences, Powell sets forth the dreadful costs of the fighting in terms of the human suffering involved.  Barren Victory concludes with the most detailed order of battle (including unit strengths and losses) for Chickamauga ever compiled, and a comprehensive bibliography”—Michele Sams, Savas Beatie, LLC.

David A. Powell received his B.A. in History from Virginia Military Institute in 1983.  He is currently employed at CBS Messenger, a family business in Chicago.  Powell is a recipient of the Richard B. Harwell Award from the Atlanta Civil War Round Table.  Other publications include The Maps of Chickamauga: An Atlas of the Chickamauga Campaign, Failure in the Saddle, Chickamauga Campaign: A Mad Irregular Battle, and Chickamauga Campaign: Glory or the Grave.
