Moore Too Much As Lookout Valley Whips CSAS

Yellow Jackets Now 9-2 Following 72-37 Romp Over Patriots

There is a song that talks about not pulling on Superman’s cape. The CSAS Patriots’ basketball team might want to brush up on old song lyrics because they not only pulled on it; they ripped it, and then suffered the consequences.

Lookout Valley’s Jalen Moore had to exit Friday night’s District 4-1A against the Patriots in the first quarter when his No.

3 jersey was almost torn from his chest, ripping it down the middle. A quick trip to the dressing room later, he emerged with a fresh No. 20 on his back and proceeded to score 32 points in leading the high-octane Jackets to a 72-37 victory over the host Patriots.

“Obviously, it wasn’t his lucky jersey,” laughed Lookout Valley coach Eric Ford.

Upon his return, Moore almost single-handedly beat the hosts with his season-high 32 points falling just a point shy of CSAS’ total of 33 over the course of the final three quarters and 2:22 of the first period.

“The guy just grabbed my jersey and it ripped. Didn’t bother me any. I just wanted to get back out there and play some ball,” said Moore, who was 10-of-17 from the floor with three 3-pointers.

Lookout Valley (9-2, 1-0) has been raising some eyebrows early in the season, and has really picked it up over the last five games in which it has averaged 81 points. But as good as Moore and the offense were, it was a pesky defense which ultimately did the Patriots in.

“We play so much better when we let our defense dictate our offense,” said Ford. “We try to create as much mayhem as possible out there. Our biggest stat we track is team deflections. We don’t really want to run a lot of set plays on offense. We only have about five plays, so we count on getting it on the defensive end and turning it into quick points.”

Mission accomplished.

The Jackets forced 16 first-half turnovers with a full-court press that produced runs of 5-0, 11-2 and 12-0 in the initial half to take a 48-18 lead to the dressing room.

Moore had nine of the 12 points in the telling 12-0 run in the second period which doubled a 12-point lead (28-16) to 40-16. He finished with 16 at the break as he, and fellow guard Darion Robinson provided a formidable two-man punch. Robinson added 16 on the night, including four 3-pointers.

Lookout Valley pulled off the press in the second half, but its half-court defense was just as tenacious and with two players hurt and another absent for a school visit in Memphis, Ford only had three players on the bench to take care of the mop-up action when it got out of hand.

An 8-0 run to open the second half made it 53-18, but to its credit, CSAS played hard to the final buzzer, especially Hollis Edwards, who had a nasty fall in the first half. Edwards shook off the pain and scored 10 of his team-high 15 in the final 3:19 of the third period.

No other Jacket player scored in double digits, but big man Denzel Daniel had a couple of blocks and controlled the boards to go along with seven points.

“We have three guys in Moore, Robinson and Daniel who can score a lot of points on any given night. They really don’t care which one does it. They each average between 15 and 18 points a game, and some nights one of them will have 30 and the next time out someone else will step it up. This is a close group and I really like this team,” Ford added.

Lookout Valley shot 44 percent from the floor on 25 of 57 shooting and made nine of 30 3-point attempts. CSAS (5-4, 1-1) made only 16 of 53 shots on the night (30 percent) and wound up with 22 turnovers for the game.

T.J. Pulliam hit two longs 3s for the Patriots and Cahlib Edwards made a long one as the two finished with six and five points, respectively for CSAS.

Girls game

Lookout Valley 44, CSAS 18: Rainey Barber led the Lady Jackets with 18 points as Lookout Valley pulled away from a tight 16-11 halftime lead to best the Lady Patriots in the District 4-1A contest. Jalisa Sanders added another 10 as Lookout Valley (4-5, 2-0) poured in 28 second-half points while holding CSAS to seven to clinch it.

CSAS (1-8, 0-2) got a team-high seven points from Macie Meyners, but no one else had more than a bucket. Casey Crownover and Alex Spencer each added six  to the Lady Jackets’ winning cause.
