Cold winter weather has moved into the Valley. TVA wants you to save money and stay cozy by following these savvy suggestions from EnergyRight Solutions.

With temperatures forecasted to dip into the teens in the Valley this week, don't let your money fly out the door as your heaters get a workout.

The value of public power is that we want you to save money. Take this deep cold-snap as an opportunity to winter-proof your habits and your home and help save money on your energy bill all season long.

Top 10 Tips for Saving Energy this Winter

1.  Let there be light—Keep curtains open on the south side of the house and closed on the north during the day to trap the warming sunlight.
2.  Increase your home’s IQ—Install an ENERGY STAR certified programmable thermostat.
3.  Steady as you go—Set your thermostat to 68°F. Turn it down even more when no one is home for several days.
4.  Bundle up—Insulate heating and cooling ducts and repair any air leaks. Add insulation to your attic, crawlspaces and any accessible exterior walls.
5.  Keep it clean—Change air filters monthly. Dirty filters force your heating system to work harder.
6.  Seal it up—Caulk and weather-strip around windows and doors and install insulating gaskets to exterior light switches and electrical outlets to stop air leaks.
7.  Family meals—Take advantage of the heat generated by cooking.
8.  Close the damper—Don’t send warm air up the chimney. Make sure the fireplace damper is closed when not in use.
9.  Decorate—Use area rugs if you have hardwood or tile floors to keep your feet warm.
10. Create breathing room—Keep weeds and debris away from the outdoor unit of your heating system.
