Lee Baseball Wins 11-2 Over Young Harris

  • Tuesday, February 21, 2017
Spencer Mossburg and Geremy Walton combined to drive home seven runs in Lee’s 11-2 victory over Young Harris College on Tuesday afternoon.

After being blanked for the first two innings, the Flames went to work in the top of the third. Mossburg ripped a two-run homer (his third) to left-center scoring Chase Andrews. Walton quickly followed with his fourth home run of the year.

The Flames plated four more runs in the fifth inning. Walton’s fly ball scored Zack Zyburt.
Drew Johnson singled home Tyler Payne and Johnson later scored on a passed ball. Jordan Howard singled up the middle scoring Peyton Meeker with the final run of the inning, giving the Flames a commanding 7-0 advantage. A single run followed in the sixth inning when Walton doubled home Payne.

“We did an excellent job of creating big innings today,” pointed out coach Mark Brew after his Flames improved to 10-2 on the year. “To win on the road you need to score runs and we were able to accomplish that. It also allowed us to throw some guys that needed to get some work.”

The Lee skipper wasted little time before he began thinking about the weekend series. “We will shift our focus to a very good Delta State team. It will be a challenge, but I like the way our team is preparing and playing right now.” Saturday’s doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. opening pitch at Olympic Field and the final game of the three-game series is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday

The Mountain Lions put two runs on the board in the seventh inning. Royce Woolfolk and Luke Miller picked up the RBI. Lee pitching dominated Young Harris the remainder of the afternoon. The Flames tallied three unearned runs in the top of the ninth. Miguel Pimentel, Nate Wierzgac and Zyburt scored what turned out to be the final tallies.

Lee used five pitchers. Wes Albert started and hurled 2.2 innings, allowing two hits but posting five impressive strikeouts. Corbin Lamb (3-0) pitched 2.1 innings and picked up the victory. He had two strikeouts and walked one. Christian Bokich got the call for 1.1 innings. He surrendered two hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out two. Michael Ray followed with 1.2 innings. He gave up three hits, fanned two and walked one. Winston Whitener pitched the ninth. He struck out one and walked one.

The Mountain Lions posted a total of eight hits. Zach Odom had a pair of hits, while Cory Ewald and Tyler Washington had hits and scored a run. Eight Young Harris hurlers worked. McLain Harris was the starting and losing pitcher.
