East Hamilton sophomore Sydney Dattilo carries a 3.7 in the classroom, sings in the school choir and enjoys her Honors Chemistry class.

Tuesday at the Champions Club in the District 5 AAA singles finals, No.2 seed Dattilo had plenty of good Chemistry on the tennis court as she defeated defending champion and No.1 seed Olivia Crawley, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

“This is a big deal for me to win the district and I know that Olivia and I could meet again in the region finals next week for a chance to advance to the state tournament,” said Dattilo late Tuesday afternoon.

“I tried to stay away from her strong backhand in the first set, but it did work that well for me so I just played straight up the last two sets.”

Dattilo’s Busy Day: After receiving her first place medal from her coach and tournament director Michael Jackson and talking to this reporter for a few minutes, she hurried back to school to sing in a school choir performance and then home to study – most likely Honors Chemistry.

Other winners were unseeded Shelby Noe and Bailey Coyner (Soddy Daisy) in girls’ doubles, while No.2 seed Jared Elrod (Bradley Central) won the boys singles as did No.1 seed Vareen Patel-Jack Hughes in boys doubles.

Bracket Busters: In girls doubles, unseeded team of Shelby Noe and Bailey Coyner defeated the No.1 seed in the quarters, the No.4 seed in the semis and the No.2 seed in the finals.

Wednesday Region Matches: At 4 p.m. at the Hixson Racquet Club … Soddy Daisy girls hosts Cookeville and Cleveland Boys hosts Cookeville.
