Randy Smith: Why Football Season Moves So Quickly

It seems like only yesterday that we were all excited about the beginning of the football season. It took seemingly forever for the season to get here. There were literally thousands of talk shows that started chatting about the 2018 college football season in January; just after Alabama had beaten Georgia in the National Championship Game. There was spring football and recruiting to talk about first and to pass the time in the summer there were all the pre-season polls and media days, with all of them creating excitement about what would actually begin around mid to late August.

So, when the season finally gets here, why does it pass so quickly? We turn around once, blink our eyes twice and the season is over.
True sports fans are then turning to basketball and hockey but believe me, those sports are nothing more than activities to get us through until the next football season gets here.
Nationwide, the NFL may be more popular especially in the larger markets but in the south it's high school football on Friday and college football on Saturday. Most southerners enjoy watching professional football, but they get really passionate about their local high school and college teams. Communities like South Pittsburg, for instance live and breathe for those Friday nights in the fall. Calhoun High School in Georgia is another small community that considers those Friday nights to be scared, almost as much as going to church on Sunday mornings.

Going to football games on the weekend is something that folks plan all week long. They think about what they're going to wear, and what they will bring to the tailgate to eat and drink. They make sure early in the week that they have enough tickets to get all the people in their party through the gates. All this planning and organizing is old hat for programs that have been winning for years like South Pittsburg and Calhoun. For others who have just started being successful, like Whitwell for instance, it's a brand new but exciting experience.

The Christmas season is much like football. When I was much younger, Christmas would take forever to get here but when it finally arrived it was seemingly over in minutes. I imagine most people feel the same way about things that they all enjoy. Football, Christmas, two things we all enjoy that each take forever to get here but two things that are over much too soon.

They are each things that can help us forget the day to day struggles we go through, or the pressure we are under as parents and providers to make things much better for our families. That's why they leave us much too quickly. There is really nothing like football,so let's all enjoy these last few weeks. It may take awhile for it to come back around.
