Covenant Baseball Wins 6-3 Over Piedmont

The Covenant men's tennis team continued its roll through the USA South with a 6-3 victory over visiting Piedmont on Friday evening at the Covenant Tennis Complex.

The win kept Covenant (10-2, 5-0 USA South) undefeated in conference play and atop the USA South West Division standings. The Scots are two matches up in the loss column from both LaGrange and Piedmont (7-5, 5-2 USA South) with five conference matches remaining. 

Covenant took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play.
Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox continued to mow through opponents as the tandem took an 8-3 win over Jackson Hill and Nathan Metzger at the top spot. Harvie and Cox are 11-1 in dual matches on the year, and 12-2 overall.

The Scots also got doubles wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Logan Hull and Taylor Galloway were 8-5 winners over Alex Tomlin and Sam Niebanck at the second flight, while Trey Wood and Paxton Haggerty were also victorious by an 8-5 score over Andrew Chitty and Bryan Barnett at the third spot.

Harvie took down Metzger at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 9-0 on the year in dual matches. Harvie's victory clinched the match for the Scots.

Cox won his 49th career singles match, one shy of tying an all-time Covenant program record, with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Hill at the second spot. Cox's win gave Covenant a 4-0 match lead.

Hull captured the final point for the Scots with his three-set victory over Kanler Cumbass 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). Galloway also went three sets in his match, but the freshman fell to Barnett 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) at the fourth spot. Piedmont would take the final two singles matches.

Covenant will host Brevard on Saturday. The match has been moved to the indoor courts at Baylor School in Chattanooga. First serve is now set for 12 p.m.
