Dr. Kevin Brown
Dr. Kevin Brown, professor of English at Lee University, had two essays accepted for publication in online newsletters/anthologies.
Dr. Brown’s essay, “Why I Stopped Giving Exams” was accepted for publication in The Teaching Professor, an online newsletter with Magna Publications. His essay explains the logic behind his change in pedagogy when he decided to stop giving exams in his classes. According to Dr. Brown, he made this change in order to move toward his ultimate goal of helping students love literature enough to want to keep reading it long after they have graduated.
“I could never design exams that truly measured what I valued,” said Dr. Brown, “so I shifted to a variety of assignments that seem to do so better.”
Dr. Brown’s other essay, “Lip Syncing,” is a creative nonfiction essay about two incidents at a church camp. It will be published on How to Pack for Church Camp, which is, according to Dr. Brown, “a site that wants to explore all that’s good and not good about such places and events.”
He has published various essays and critical articles, as well as three books of poetry, a memoir, and a book of scholarship. Dr. Brown is the only member of Lee’s faculty to be awarded each of three major faculty awards: Excellence in Advising, Excellence in Scholarship, and Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Brown received his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Mississippi and his Master of Arts from East Tennessee State University. He also earned a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Alabama, a Master of Fine Arts from Murray State University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Milligan College.
