Lee Men Tie 1-1 At LMU

  • Wednesday, September 5, 2018
On a humid Wednesday afternoon, the Lee University men’s soccer team battled for 110 minutes and recorded a 1-1 tie with Lincoln Memorial University at the LMU Soccer Complex.

“I’m proud of the boys today as they played hard for sure, but also did a good job of executing for a large portion of regulation,” said Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. “We will have to live with that result today, but nobody in the team is happy about it.”

The Flames (1-1-1) and Railsplitters (1-0-1) fired off 15 shots each with LMU outshooting Lee 3-0 in the overtime periods.
LMU placed six shots on target, while the Flames were on frame five times.

Daniel Hrenko was credited with four saves and his counterpart Caleb Cothrin gathered three saves. Both teams recorded one team save.

Lee held a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for 25 of the match’s 48 fouls.

The tightly contested match remained knotted at 0-0 until Jared McWhorter posted his first goal of the season in the 75th minutes. Matt Chartier collected the assist after beating the keeper and passing back to McWhorter.

LMU tallied the equalizer just 2 ½ minutes later with Christoph Willemsen’s header. Danilo Seglio and Edwin Vaas were credited with the double assist.

“We have taken steps forward in every game in terms of executing our vision and today was another step forward. That being said, we have to learn how to win these games. It’s amazing the momentum that can be established when you start winning games like this as you just walk into every game believing you will win,” added Potteiger.

After opening the season with three road matches, the Flames open up the home portion of the schedule on Saturday against Bellarmine University. The non-conference match begins at 5 p.m. with a pregame tailgate party beginning at 4:30 p.m.

“We need to recover physically, but Saturday can’t get here fast enough so we can get out on our field in front of our fans,” Potteiger concluded.
