The Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team scored a huge 4-3 victory over Wofford in key Southern Conference action on Friday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
Following the win, Chattanooga improves to 2-1 inside league action and 8-11 overall this season while sitting in a two-way tie with Mercer for third place in the standings. Wofford drops to 7-9 overall and 2-3 inside SoCon play after the narrow defeat.
It was a clean sweep in the opening doubles format for the visiting Mocs as all three pairings came away with victories.
The No. 1 duo of Jakub Jupa and Peyton Gatti opened things with a 6-2 victory before the No. 2 tandem of Cortland Grove and Jordan McClure earned a 6-4 win to clinch the team point. The No. 3 pairing of Gabriel Castillo and Kristof Kincses concluded with a 7-6 (7-2) victory.
In singles, UTC extended its lead in the team score to 3-0 following a 6-0, 6-2 win from Jupa at No. 1 and a 6-1, 6-2 win from Grove at the No. 4 position. Wofford responded with three-straight victories at the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 6 slots to even the match at 3-3 with one remaining battle.
Kincses provided the heroics for Chattanooga with a hard-fought comeback victory in the No. 5 singles matchup. The sophomore rallied for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-5 three-set victory to give the guests the ultimate match-clinching fourth point of the day, sealing the 4-3 victory.

In its final non-conference dual of the season, the Chattanooga Mocs women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at Presbyterian College at the Templeton Tennis Courts in Clinton, S.C., on Friday afternoon.
Following the defeat, Chattanooga drops to 8-9 overall on the season with four SoCon matches left in regular season play. Presbyterian evens its record to 9-9 overall this spring after the victory.
The Blue Hose captured a 1-0 lead following wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 pairings in doubles action. The No. 2 battle in the doubles format went unfinished after the home team clinched the point with a 6-4 win in the No. 3 slot.
After PC captured the No. 6 singles battle and a 2-0 lead, Caroline Gibbens brought UTC back within a point in the team score, 2-1, with a clean 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. Alice Hall tied the match 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 4 before PC rounded out the event with wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 3.
