UTC Women Finish Fifth At SoCon Golf Championships

  • Tuesday, April 16, 2024
The Chattanooga Mocs completed the Southern Conference Championships in fifth place Tuesday afternoon. The final round 300 moved the ladies past playing partner Western Carolina and within one of fourth place Mercer.

The duo of Violeta Fernandez-Tagle and Makenzie Cooper led the way with 74s. Giulia Foresta was one behind with 75, while Kera Healey finished with 77. Nieves Martin’s 80 was the drop tally.

“Obviously not what we were hoping for this week,” Coach Colette Murray said.
“But V played really well, and we’re the only team in the conference that isn’t graduating anyone in the lineup. It’s also possible our season isn’t over.

“We may have an opportunity to play in the NGI (National Golf Invitational). Those invites go out after the NCAA selection show, so we might have that to look forward to.”

Fernandez-Tagle shot 6-over 222 to claim yet another top 10 finishing ninth. She has five in her last six events, all in 2024. Cooper earned a tie for 13th with 227, while Healey finished at 233. Martin was three behind at 236 as Foresta shot 239.

ETSU claimed a 13-stroke victory for its second SoCon title. Samford was second (892) with Furman a distant third just ahead of Mercer and Chattanooga. Western Carolina and UNCG tied for sixth with Wofford and The Citadel behind.
