Central HS Announces Hall of Fame Class

Inductees To Be Honored at Homecoming Oct 17 vs. Howard

Led by former U. of Georgia and Atlanta Falcon kicker Bobby Etter, state wrestling champion Reuben Justice, former baseball coach Gary Rundles and former basketball coach Gordon Smith,  the Chattanooga Central High School Sports Hall of Fame class of 2014 was announced earlier today.

The eight inductees will be recognized prior to the Homecoming football game next Friday with Howard.

 HOF Bar-B-Que: The photos of the eight inductees will be unveiled at 5:45 p.m. followed by a bar-b-que dinner, 6 -7:15 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

Need Nominations: The hall of fame committee needs nominations and background information on HOF candidates … there will be a table at the hall of fame dinner to submit nominations for future induction classes.

Bobby Etter (’63) … kicker for U. of Georgia and NFL’s Atlanta Falcons ... member of undefeated state champion 1962 Pounder team … Grand Life Master in American Contract Bridge League and two national championships … has doctorate in math … brother, Gene, and father, Red, are members of the school’s inaugural HOF class of 2014 … Etter led the SEC in scoring in 1965. and kicked three field goals in big Georgia win, 15-7, at Michigan that fall.

Reuben Justice ('69) ... football/wrestling ... state champion wrestler ... All-OVC at MTSU ... former principal at Orchard Knob Middle School

Ray Moss Jr. ('55) ... HS Al-American center in football ... member of multiple state championship Pounder teams … All-SEC at Tennessee ... co-founder of Golden Gallon … chairman of football stadium committee which raised funds to build stadium at school’s current location …passed away in plane crash in Oct. 1976… teammate of fellow inductee Wayne Standefer

David Owen (’85) … baseball … played at Carson-Newman and AAA in Boston Red Sox organization … played five years of pro ball with best season in 1989 at 13-9 with Lynchburg (Class A) of the Carolina League …

Andrea Roark ('89) ... softball ... All-Conference and Academic All-American at Tennessee Tech ...member of Tenn. Tech HOF

Gary Rundles ... baseball coach, 1978-85 ... coached Pounders to 1985 state title ... win-loss record, 171-72 ... current baseball coach at West Alabama Univ. ... member of Tennessee Baseball Coaches Assoc. Hall of Fame

Gordon Smith ... teacher/basketball coach ... l1952-74: win-loss record was 384-233 ... led Purple Pounders to several district titles and a 1958 state runner-up finish to Lenoir City, losing by one point.

Wayne Standefer ('56) ... all-state basketball player for coach Gordon Smith in 1954-55 … teammate of fellow inductee Ray Moss Jr. … member of multiple Pounder state championship teams … played at Tenn. Tech.
