Brandy Singleton’s current career path in photography began at home when she was young.
“It’s always been in our family; my twin brother actually works in photography and my father works in television,” said Ms. Singleton. “It’s always been in the back of my head that it was what I wanted to do for a living.”
It wasn’t until she got her General Educational Development diploma through Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s (GNTC) Adult Education program, however, that she got the preparation she needed to own and operate her own photography company.
“If I would have never got my GED, I would have never been able to do the photography with different kinds of companies to actually better myself to be able to launch my company,” said Ms. Singleton, a resident of Rockmart.
Today, Ms. Singleton’s company Day Dream Photography handles all types of projects such as weddings, senior pictures, prom pictures, and live performances. In September, she was hired to be a photographer for the annual Gulf Coast Jam held in Panama City Beach, Fl.
“I got my media passes and every night I had to photograph a certain artist,” said Ms. Singleton. “My first night was Randy Houser and then it was Blake Shelton; very fun.”
Anne Clay, lead teacher and site manager for the Adult Education Center on GNTC’s Polk County Campus, remembers Ms. Singleton as a very dedicated student.
“Brandy was the essence of a wonderful adult learner. She was eager to learn the skills needed to be successful in class and on the GED tests,” said Ms. Clay. “These traits were the foundation for Brandy being successful in making and meeting her life goals. She was always gracious, kind, and helpful to everyone.”
Ms. Singleton says that Ms. Clay was the one who continued to push her and tell her to continue with her studies.
“When I graduated she gave me the Determination Award,” said Ms. Singleton. “That was actually pretty cool.”
According to Ms. Singleton, once she got over the initial fear of returning to school, it was actually a great experience.
“When I was in the middle of the process it just felt like second nature to me,” said Ms. Singleton. “You get all kinds of rewards afterwards; I mean there are just so many opportunities with your GED to be able to do things.”
